Frequently Asked Questions

Is therapy right for me?

My personal belief is that therapy is for everyone, but most people seek out therapy when they are experiencing some form of emotional and/or mental pain that they can no longer cope with (e.g. unexpected life changes, trauma, depression, grief, relationship issues, anxiety, and/or stress). If you’re someone who struggles with such pain and also seeks an affirming space that promotes healing and exploration, therapy may be for you.

What is therapy like?

When most people think of therapy, they imagine the following scenario - someone laying down on a couch as a therapist asks, “And how does that make you feel?” While this question does turn up in therapy quite often, there is much more to it than what is depicted in popular media. Therapy comes in many different shapes and forms, catering to your unique circumstances. For example, sometimes therapy is simply a non-judgmental space for you to talk about whatever your heart desires. At other times, therapy is more structured and the therapist will have you practice a new skill or participate in some sort of activity, such as deep breathing or guided meditation. Therapy can also involve the therapist challenging you to step outside of your comfort zone, such as asking you to be accountable for your actions. Ultimately, therapy can be shaped and molded to your liking. You get to decide what works for you and what doesn’t.

With that being said, most therapy sessions consist of a basic structure:

  • You and your therapist discuss what happened to you since your last meeting.

  • Your therapist asks you if there’s anything in particular that you want to talk about.

  • Your therapist checks in on any “assignments” they previously suggested.

  • Your therapist informs you that the session is coming to an end and provides a brief overview of what happened during your time together.

Once again, therapy can be amended to meet you specific preferences and needs, so it doesn’t have to abide by this structure if it doesn’t work for you.

How can I pay for a session?

Payments can be made via cash, check, credit/debit, or Venmo.

How will therapy help me?

Therapy can elicit a multitude of positive benefits. You will be provided with support and evidence based coping strategies to help you ameliorate your challenges and obtain your goals. For example, you will cultivate skills and techniques to help you mitigate symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, stress, negative self-talk, and relationship issues. Similarly, you will establish a deep understanding of yourself, not only learning about your triggers and insecurities, but also about your strengths. You will learn how to make peace with your past and develop a brighter perspective of the future. Therapy also offers a fresh perspective of your world, helping you to escape cumbersome habits.

Is therapy confidential?

All communications between you and your therapist are held in strict confidence unless you provide specific written permission (release of information). In rare circumstances, your therapist is legally required to break this confidentially. Exceptions include:

  • Stated harm to self

  • Stated harm to others

  • Suspected child abuse

  • Suspected elder abuse

  • Suspected dependent adult abuse
